What is Juneteenth?

Search homes for sale in Ventura CountyThe history of Juneteenth began on June 19, 1865.  That was the day that Major General Gordon Granger rode in to Galveston, TX with the news that the war was over.  It also was decreed that all slaves were now free men.  The Emancipation Proclamation had officially been signed on January 1, 1863.  There are several theories as to why it took two and a half years for the news to reach Texas.  But no one knows for sure.
