Sun Protection Tips for the Ventura County Resident

Sun Protection Tips for the Ventura County Resident

July is right around the corner and the sun is hot, especially here in sunny California where the sun shines over 272 days of the year. Therefore, it is very important to know sun safety and protection tips. We have all been sunburned at some point in our lives and we all can certainly agree that it is no fun!

Not only is sunburn terrible to endure, but it is not safe for the health of our skin. Even though we all know that you are supposed to wear sunscreen, sometimes we get on the beach or out in the sun and just don’t apply it. Hopefully these tips will help you:

  1. It is good to go ahead and get in the habit of wearing sunscreen anytime you are out in the sun. Apply it every day if you have to. Carry it on you.
  2. Keep in mind that the sun is hottest between the hours of 10am and 2pm. Try to avoid doing yard work or generally being out in the direct sunlight during these time frames.
  3. Wear hats, long sleeves, or long pants to help protect your skin when outside.
  4. With children, it is important to take extra precautions and teach them sun safety, as well. Re-apply sunscreen together every 80 minutes. Set an alarm on your phone to help you remember.
  5. If you are going to wear sunglasses, choose ones with UV protection or polarized sunglasses. These will help protect your face and eyes the most from the harsh sun.
  6. Most cosmetics now come with a certain level of UV protection. Therefore, when purchasing these products, look for the correct labeling for an extra boost of safety on your face daily.

Lastly, remember that you know your skin best. Stay aware of what your regular skin looks like and pay attention if anything looks different. Happy sunning in Ventura, California!
