Camarillo is a fairly new city but it has always been a small friendly and close community. The city was incorporated in 1964. Six years after the death of Adolfo Camarillo, the town named for him became a city (on September 29, 1964) It was incorporated with some 10,000 residents and a land area of 5.5 square miles. The official City Seal bears the resemblance of Adolfo riding one of his famous white horses.

Old Town Camarillo is a mile-long section of the city that is dedicated to the city’s early days. Every Saturday morning, there is an open-air Farmer’s Market held on Ventura Boulevard.

The current economy in Camarillo is strong and diversified, with high-tech, manufacturing, bio-medical industries and agriculture making it popular in the business sector. The city government offers a business-friendly climate to large and small businesses alike. It nurtures small companies with assistance programs offered by the Gold Coast Small Business Development Center and Camarillo Chamber of Commerce. An article in the Camarillo Star stated that a study ranked Camarillo 13th among Southern California cities for high-tech employment. Examples of its success as an industry leader are demonstrated by the continued success of such companies as Technicolor, Imation, G & H Technology and the 3M Company.

Pleasant Valley School District is the oldest school district in Ventura County. It was started by the first 40 families in the valley. Camarillo has an excellent public school system with a low pupil-to-teacher ratio. There are 17 private schools in the area. Pleasant Valley School District oversees the elementary and intermediate grades. Oxnard Unified oversees the high schools. There are a total of 14 schools, four of which have received academic excellence awards in the Pleasant Valley School District. Pleasant Valley also has three alternative schools for parents that prefer a non-traditional or a more structured environment. The Ventura County Community Colleges District has three campuses: Ventura College, Oxnard College and Moorpark, all within easy traveling distance. The newest campus in the California University system, California State University at the Channel Islands, is located in Camarillo. The city is also home to St. John’s Seminary.

Just minutes away is the Pacific Ocean and the Channel Islands National Park, where swimming, sunbathing, surfing and sailing can be enjoyed. Less than an hour away are the mountains where there are freshwater lakes for fishing or water-skiing and trails for hiking or mountain biking, with camping sites available in the Santa Monica Mountains Recreational Area and Los Padres National Forest. Right in town are 18 neighborhood parks and five community parks for family picnics, that also offer activities from tennis to soccer to swimming. Golfing is close at hand as well with over 30 first-class courses within a half-hour's drive. Camarillo has two public courses: Camarillo Springs Club and Sterling Hills Club. There are two private courses: Spanish Hills and Las Posas Country Clubs. Jogging and biking paths are plentiful in and around Camarillo, with about 30 miles of land set aside for this purpose.

For some, shopping and dining are more likely to be on their list for great recreation. Camarillo offers a wide variety of dining choices, from popular fast food to fine dining in unique settings. Camarillo Premium Outlets offers the whole gamut in shopping choices, with 120 outlet stores offering leading designer and name-brand merchandise. This is great recreation for the bargain hunter. In case you missed something on your hunt, there are several other shopping centers and plazas located in the city.

The City of Camarillo hosts a full calendar throughout the year, with special events, festivals, fairs and summer concerts. There is something for everyone and every age.
