For the better part of the last two weeks, Southern California has been under siege. So far, fire destroyed thousands of homes, displacing hundreds of thousands of people and their pets. It has been heartbreaking to see so many people affected by this. With more wind expected this week, firefighters will have their hands full trying to contain the wildfires as much as possible. If you want to help the victims of the Southern California wildfires, there are some ways that are more helpful than others. Please read on to find out more.
Southern California Wildfires: How You Can Help
Many people donate food and clothing right away when a disaster strikes. While the thought behind that is sound, the reality is that this may not be your best course of action. Unfortunately, it can be difficult for those in need to get to the places that accept these donations. Even if that poses no problem, they may not currently reside in a place where they can store these items. Instead, donations of money and/or time provide the biggest impact in helping those in need at trying times like this.
Where to Donate Money
American Red Cross – Always a great place to start. They provide food, water and shelter as well as emotional support during emergencies. Money donated helps them purchase everything needed.
LA Fire Department Foundation – Want to help the firefighters? Donate to the LA Fire Department Foundation. They provide personal emergency shelters used when firefighters in the field get overcome by flames. (Think: shelter-in-place to the extreme.) They also purchase extra hydration packs and brush tools that allow them to continue to perform their duties in the field no matter what they face.
Wildfire Recovery Fund – They provide financial assistance directly to displaced people as well as support in rebuilding homes, mental health services, and medical care, including emergency supplies.
Pasadena Humane Society – In addition to humans, thousands of animals found themselves displaced by the fires. The Pasadena Humane Society received overwhelming support from the community with an influx of pet food and other supplies. To continue the animals’ care, please donate money so that they can purchase items as they run low. Or, if possible, check with them or any local shelter to see if you might be able to foster an animal or two for now.
Where to Check for Volunteer Opportunities
LA Regional Food Bank – They need help in both their Vernon (1743 E 41st St) and City of Industry (2300 Pellisier Place) locations. They are also accepting food donations at this time.
No Res Gourmet – They need volunteers to help cook, pack, and distribute food.
Project Angel Food – They also need help cooking, packing, and delivering meals.
Habitat for Humanity – Sign up to volunteer with their wildlife efforts. They’ll contact you once needs make themselves known This gets you on their volunteer list.
Local YMCAs – Many local YMCAs have offered free emergency child care for parents who need to check on the condition of their households or businesses. They also need help distributing donated items to those who need them.
If there is an organization you would know of that needs volunteers and/or donations, please feel free to list them in the comments below. Thank you.
