Tips for Your Lawn- Have the Greenest Grass in Ventura County!

When you see a beautiful lawn full of luscious, green grass, don’t you just get grass envy? Especially, when you drive home to your lawn and see brown spots and patches, and dry-looking grass. Yuck! Having a beautiful lawn adds so much appeal to the home. However, that kind of grass can be hard to get, or maintain.

Not everyone has a green thumb, but we are here to tell you that you do not have to be a super star yard know-it-all to get the kind of grass that you want. Here, we have some super simple tips to get that kind of gorgeous lawn you can walk around bare-footed on. There are really 4 main parts to keeping your grass perfect, that you need to know about.

The need to breathe

In order for the lawn to be good-looking, it needs room to breathe so it can grow and stay strong. The best ways for your lawn to breathe is by keeping debris like leaves, pine cones, and miscellaneous items off of it. The next step is to aerate the grass when it is damp. You want the soil to be a little damp, too. You can just get a simple aerator at the local home improvement store and it requires nothing but your time and a little energy by walking around and placing your foot on the tool so it can press into the soil.

Keep it fed

Now that your yard can breathe, it needs to eat. Warm months are growing season for your lawn and that is the time to fertilize the yard. Sometimes, the grass can lose that deep or bright green color (depending on your grass). You can use nitrogen to enhance the color.

Mow the lawn regularly

This is an important part and often the hardest part. But, you want to keep the lawn cut down by 1/3 of the blade or less. In order to maintain this, be sure and keep the blades to your mower nice and sharp.

Water it the correct way

Watering is another important tip. You cannot always wait on the rain to keep your grass wet. There are times when you will need to do this yourself. There is a right and wrong way to water grass, if you can believe it! The key is to water your grass deeply enough versus often enough. The best time to water your grass is actually in the morning because the dawn mildew helps you. Once the sun hits and heats the yard, it dries the grass and it will take you longer.

With spring in the air, it gets you moving. You want to work on your yard and get it spring ready. This must be partly where the term “spring fever” comes from. It is a good thing to work on your green thumb but beginners beware! You do not want to destroy your yard trying to improve on it. Here are some tips for the beginner lawn.

If you are a savvy shopper, you like to save money. Therefore, you go to the local home store and pick up things like yard fertilizer, treatment for fleas and ticks, and weed and grass killers. Being the bargain shopper that you are, you want to get the best prices for the best products. The most important tip that comes with reading the reviews on the products, is to read the instructions. If you want to save your money, use the product properly.

Now, about that weed killer. Be cautious not to get over-joyed about killing those pesky weeds in the yard. You do not want to kill the good stuff and ruin your yard. Be sure and do your research before you go crazy on those weeds!

A trimmed and sculpted yard is so beautiful. We all want to achieve this nice, neat look. However, before you start grooming the yard and trimming the bushes, please know how to cut the branches and limbs the correct way. Misuse of the branches could cost you the whole bush so be careful.

Planting is fun and exciting. This is very true. When you are planting new things, be sure and allow them enough room to grow. Be aware of placing your beautiful new plants too close together.

You are working hard to have a pretty yard with beautiful grass so be sure and treat your grass good. Do not cut it more than 2 and a half to three inches short, and be sure you are watering it enough. Your lawn really needs to have enough water to make the soil 6 inches deep when you water it.

Quick and Easy Energy Savers

Reducing the energy you use in your Ventura County home helps save you money while reducing the strain on our planet’s resources.  Even small changes can make a big difference in the long run.  But where do you begin?  It’s simple with these quick and easy energy savers.

Get rid of your old incandescent lightbulbs.  Replacing a 60-watt incandescent bulb with a more energy-efficient CFL (compact fluorescent lamp) bulb can save 85 kWh per bulb per year.  Think about all the lightbulbs you use in your home.  That savings can add up quickly.  Some CFLs (like the Philips brand) can last up to 25 times longer than a traditional incandescent bulb.  Also, LED lights are the most energy-efficient models of lighting you can find.

Another quick, easy and inexpensive way to save energy is by replacing the old showerheads in your Ventura County home with a real water-saving showerhead.  These are available at your local home improvement stores, discount stores (WalMart, K-Mart, etc) or specialty stores (such as Bed, Bath and Beyond).  A 1.6 gpm showerhead will save approximately 3500 gallons of water per year.

This tip is simple and doesn’t cost you a cent: UNPLUG.  Even when an electronic device is turned off, it is still drawing energy (5-10% of your Ventura home’s total energy consumption) while it is plugged into the wall. Coffee makers, toasters, blenders, TVs, DVD players, computers, monitors, etc, all use energy (even in energy-saving modes) while they are plugged into the wall.  Unplug the small appliances.  Use a power strip for your other electronics.  Power strips are not just great protection against a power surge, but they also double as an easy way to safely power off and on your electronic devices with a single button.

Saving energy in your Ventura County home doesn’t have to be difficult, time-consuming or even cost you anything to implement.  These quick and easy energy savers reduce your energy consumption, eliminate wasteful usage and increase the money you put in your wallet.  That’s good for the environment as well as your bottom line.

Five Remodeling Projects Ventura County Homeowners Should ConsiderRemodeling can be a scary word.  Especially when you consider the time and effort behind it.  However, homebuyers are looking for a Ventura home that is up to date and ready to move in.  Not all remodeling projects need to cost an arm and a leg or take a huge chunk of time to do.  Here are five remodeling projects Ventura County homeowners should consider:

Remodeling Project #1 – Adding a Wood Deck Exterior living spaces are a huge draw for Ventura County homeowners, especially in our beautiful Southern California weather.  Making your backyard a more welcome place to relax and entertain will increase the value of your home and make buyers sit up and take notice.  It can be completed over the course of a weekend, too.

Remodeling Project #2 – Kitchen Facelift The kitchen remains the heart of the household for most Ventura homes and continues to be one of the largest selling points.  The complete gutting and rebuilding that was the norm in the past has given way to a simple facelift.  Sanding and refinishing or painting good cabinets, adding a colorful backsplash, changing the flooring and adding or changing cabinet and drawer hardware can make a huge difference without busting your budget.  A fresh coat of paint can completely change the look of your kitchen and only costs $15-$17 per gallon.  Update your old appliances with newer, more energy-efficient Energy Star appliances. That’ll cost way too much money!”, you need to know that I am talking about using your current space to create more usable living area.  While it’s true that constructing a completely new addition to the exterior of your home can take time to pull permits, frame, plumb and build, many Ventura homeowners are converting current attic space into a beautiful master bedroom suite.  Basements can be changed from a simple storage area into a wonderful family/bonus room or extra bedroom space as well.  Since the new room has already been included in the original construction of your Ventura County home, you don’t need to get plans approved or pull permits.  This saves you time and money and increases the usable living area of your home without increasing your property taxes.
