February is Black History Month. Originally, officials set aside just one week to honor African American history. However, it quickly became clear that that was not nearly enough time to showcase all of the contributions African Americans made to our lives. So, it became a month-long celebration back in 1970. Ventura Celebrates Black History Month right now with a few more events planned before February ends.

Ventura Celebrates Black History Month with live music, chalk art work, and much more every weekend in February.

Live music fills the air on Saturday, February 21st. Musical group Intent plays their reggae-infused rhythm to the Channel Island Courtyard from 12 pm to 3 pm. On Sunday, February 22nd, come watch local artists create beautiful masterpieces in chalk on the sidewalks of Ventura Harbor Village. These beautiful works of art keep black history events and prominent African American figures as their inspiration. For the final weekend of February, guests get to enjoy more live music courtesy of The Calypso Pirates.

As always, feel free to visit any of the village’s shops and boutiques while you are there. And when you get hungry, any of the restaurants and pubs offer a variety of choices to satiate any hunger completely. Make a day of it with your friends and family. Lots of fun for everyone.
